A good start for the 51 Spoleto Festival edition. Yesterday in the evening 25 june, at 19:00 has been represented the preview titled Padmāvatī. It was a dress reheseal with all the dresses, scenografia, horse, elephant and the tiger, opened to the the press and also to the public. A large one happening without average terms. And it's said by an " Integriste Melodrammatico". At the beginning Maestro Ferrara seemed oriented to propose a mastodontic masterpiece of the Melodramma, the Tristano and Isotta di R.Wagner. Certainly, it would be great for me. Probably we would be ended like simple emulates as an example, the Scaligera Season? Or we could give space to musicians like that one of G.Puccini in the year of its anniversary? We would even be ended monothematically online with other manifestations. Then it has shifted for a different choice. Albert Roussell does not have the reputation of Italian G.Verdi or an other name of the Drammaturgia Olympus like Richard Wagner. Probably the choice has been providential. The key of reading our Festival is "unforeseeable", but it's not borning from the chance. In spite of the problems that have speaded especially during the last few years, we can always find a constant and high cultural contents. This want to demonstrate that Spoleto is always lucky to find a " Duca" that keep high our reputation. The only problem is that the show would have been all right. The Padmāvatī it is ok. Feature from a history of a remote region, India, of the thirteenth century, with characters not too much Western, it has positive contents, although tragic. There is wonderfull Princess, Padmāvatī, that it is ready to sacrifice her happy love story, killing her husband and herself in her funeral pyre, according the directives of the priests, for her people happiness. The end sees the good to prevail over the evil because the terrible Alauddin will be with no expected rapes, and husband and wife will be in paradise. The booklet previews an opera sung in French Language. The history is easy to follow also thanks to the subtitles in Italian and the simple plot makes the opera suitable to a public a lot diversified, from children to the most damned specialists.
After a short reflection they are ready to pass to a more technical analysis. We begin from the direction. Emmanuel Villaume has give a great character to the execution. I have not the opportunity to speak to the director in order to listen close his impressions on Padmāvatī and Spoleto Festival. The orchestra was dressin the plain clothes, but it could not be expected, it was a general reheseal and they have carried to term their job perfectly.
The oriental tune demand an orchestra based more on the breath instruments more that on arches. About 50 players between which at least half the breaths, situated behind and arches to it ahead, a traditional disposition with lows and percussions beginning from right to the left. 3 contrabbassi, more two harpen. For opera is a Mr orchestra. It started with an incipit breath instruments, then break out a most powerful chorus of men of great effect. Scenografie makes a wonderfull effect. Thus also the dresses. For the dresses I have listened from a friend a frantic job above all for the changes and the adjustments of the dancers. A horse enters then in the scene, then an elephant that leads primitiv Sultano Alauddin applauded with enthusiasm from public. Then it opens the ballet, before the men, then in order to please tastes of the Muslim, enters a ballet of foreign women that follows the natives. Alauddin is not still satisfied, wants for him the pearl of the pearls, Padmāvatī, that it will have to enter in scene and to drop the voile. Alauddin lauch his ultimatum through the messenger who will be killed with swords from the soldiers of the Prince. A good performance for the tenore, basso and baritono, protagonists in the first time. Padmāvatī sings her aria that ends the first act. Great job for producer and scenografo that reproduced the Princely Indian scenes with great extraordinary care.
Second act follows the lines of the first with a bigger vocal presence for Padmāvatī that takes the opportunity to show her powerful mezzo soprano voice that means a virtue of the Berlin Opera, a singer that sings those wagnerian powerfull and hard roles. Then entered the tiger drived from a brave people.
The beauty of the opera went out, speaking on music composition, at the end. Albert Roussell studies a sinfonia final, in time 4/4 that remembers a major scale, alternated with feminine chorus on the background before and then in ahead uniforms for contralti and soprani, and those male outside scene saying goodbye to the Princess who wrapped sinuosamente in a burlap from its ancelle with a choreographic movement of great effect parades beating one by one last minutes of her life. The performances of the chorus have been great too. At the end I show my approval to Maestro Ferrara for its first one " test" spoletino and I hope he continues on this line. There was also his brother, the Journalist, Giuliano, with a special white dress and red papillon. Between the public it is from anothe famous Italian journalist, Corrado Augias. At the end I have not resistit the temptation to please with the artists, two tenori and the same Padmāvatī. It's not easy to speak with Prince and Princess. They are truly kind artists, have supported my infinite questions, and with interest. Between the various curiosities they are successful to knowing that the Piccolomini and Bellemer had already worked together in Rigoletto three years ago in the Saint Louis Theatre (Missouri) Us. Bellemer has a good opinion on Spoleto. The Piccolomini has a great passion for the operistic lyric roles but she has the dream to sing like mezzosoprano solista the Verdi's Requiem means the Cossotto interpretation at the times of Karajan
The Preview of Padmāvatī, has persuaded me that this year we will have a good Festival like last seasons. I see of good degree and auspice the collaboration that Spoleto 51 and another high cultural institution in Spoleto, called Teatro Lirico Sperimentale " A.Belli" they would have to cultivate and to intensify. Thursdays 10 of July there will be a Concert in the Chiostro di S.Nicolņ, in which will take part of some of the young artist of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale "A.Belli" with Agresta Maria, soprano - Veronica Simeoni, soprano - David Sotgiu, tenore - Omar Mountain, baritono - Mirco Roverelli, pianoforte.
In Spoleto we had an ancient school of Music " A.Onofri" with good teachers and students too. I wish that one gives to interest and impulse also to this truth that can carry optimal result. What's is the peculiar feature of ours loved Festival? Can I say "originality"? We will be to see. In the meanwhile we have passed an Oriental thousands and a night.
