The Queen Christin of Sweden.
(1626 Stockholm -1689 Rome) daughter of Gustavo Adolph and Maria Eleonora from Brandeburgo. She was the Queen at tender age of six years old. The Chancellor
A.Oxenstierna presided the Council of Reggenza that governed till 1644, year of the older age of the small Queen. During this period, a perfect education was
given to the young Queen, especially in Letters and Sciences. She knew eight Languages, including Latin and Greek. Later on she wanted to take advantage of
the Council of Reggenza, as she was not interested in Government. However she made a wise political more of pacifying (Bromsebro Peace with Denmark) by
contributing her to the most important role of Vestfalia Peace in 1648. She progressively abandoned the Government in favour of adventurers and took
advantage from the situation. She loved to be surrounded with Scholars of letters and scientists like Cartesio, Ugo Grozio, Descartes and Kidney and paid a
lot of money. On june 6, 1654 she abdicated in favour of her Cousin Karl Gustav as she didn't want to have a husband (history attributed the relation with
Contessa Ebbe Sparre). Then she converted from Protestant to Catholic religion and left Sweden for Bruxsels of the King of Spain Filippo IV. On 3 November,
1654 she went to Rome, where she was invited to Vatican by Pope Alexander VII. With her friend Decio Azzolino who knew well French Cardinals helped her to
move to Paris in 1656 as she asked help from Mazzarino, in order to become the Queen of Naples. The plan failed as the French did not pardon her the order
she gave to kill Monaldeschi. Her attempt to invade Naples with the help of Francesco, the Duke of Modena, failed because he died. In 1660 the cousin Karl
Gustav and she was adviced not to succeed him on the throne. She helped Venice fight against the Turks. When she come back to Rome she succeeded to elect
Pope Clemente IX together with Azzolino who became Secretary of State. In return she had economic favors and support when she demanded the throne of Poland,
that was rejected from the Poles. She returned definitively to Rome in order to dedicate herself to the Literature, collecting a large library, artists and
writers and collecting paintings of the 1600's and the Renaissance Period. Christin was the center point of this cultural life in Rome they opposed the
Baroque style and gave origin to “Arcadia”, a year later to her death. She was buried in Saint Peter. Her personal library have given to the Vatican Library
and the assets to Azzolino.

Felice Romani has been the author of the booklet of the Melodramma "Christin of Sweden", set to music by Sigismund Thalberg. This Opera was represented for
the first time at the Kärntnerthortheater in Vienna on June 3, 1855. At first the booklet was prepared for Gaetano Donizetti.

Christin trip to Spoleto.
In her trip to Rome on Decembers 14, 1655 she left Foligno in order to go to Spoleto. Monsignor Diego Capece, Governor of Spoleto encountered her with two
Companies of Cavalery and many gentlemen. Also the Cardinal Facchinetti, Bishop of Spoleto together with Monsignor Gaudenzio Poli, Bishop of Amelia, the
Prince from Gallicano, the Governor of Orvieto and other noblemen came to see her three miles outside the walls of Spoleto. After the meeting Cardinal
Facchinetti returned back so to receive her at the Bishopric. At her arrival, the Swedish Lady at the Door of the town the soldiers greeted her with many
shots in order to receive her. She was greeted by the Magistrate at the Door of the town with the typical spirit Spoleto crowds. Christin ordered her
carriage to stop, in order to express appreciation for the warm welcome. The roads in the town were prepared with magnificent painted triumphal arches,
decorated with figures and notices. The door of "Porta fuga", was covered with a canopy that introduced woven and textiles and had a particular notice in
honor of the Real lady and another that remembered the place where Hannibal was defeated by Spoleto soldiers. Christin visited the Public square that was
prepared like a theatre. Christin arrived to Spoleto at night so she could enjoy firework prepared for her. In Bishopric, Christin was received by many noble
ladies that served her according to the best traditions. All of them had the honor to kiss her hand, and the same Christin wanted that they assist the
organized concert in her room. In the morning of Wednesday 15, Christin assisted the Mess that took place in Cathedral with the Cardinal, the Nuncios,
Clergymen, the Principles and the nobility. The soldiers garrisoned over the town where Christin passed. Also the hall of the Cathedral was embellished with
ornaments, figures and registrations. At the end of the Mess, Christin returned to Bishopric for the public lunch with the Spoleto Cardinal. After the lunch,
because of a snow storm it was impossible to follow the program to visit the Church of Saint Domenico in order to become account of the reliquia of the Saint
Nail guarded there. The evening of December 15, Christin visited the public Palace in order to attend an Opera recited by young noble artists of Spoleto, a
show of remarkable beauty because of the technological theatral machines employed. On Decembers 16, during the morning Christin left the town of Spoleto,
escorted several miles by the Cardinal of Spoleto, and to the doors of Terni by the Governor.
